Borders, barriers, limits, obstacles, and constraints—there is no shortage of boundaries in state and territorial government. All too often, these boundaries create borders that divide groups into “Us” and “Them.” The result can be fractured relationships, diminished resources, sub-optimal results, and conflict. But boundaries are also frontiers. Where boundaries collide, great leaders find new forms of collaboration. Boundaries can reveal new methods for solving problems, driving innovation, and leading change.

ASTHO partners with the Center for Creative Leadership to offer leadership support for state and territorial health officials through Boundary Spanning Leadership workshops. These workshops are based on global research and focus on leveraging boundaries to benefit a group or an entire organization. We achieve this by teaching leaders how to recognize, address, and span existing boundaries.
