Mental Health First Aid: A Primer for Public Health Professionals and Communities

This is part of the new ASTHO Leadership Check-Up Series: Developing Your Resiliency as a Public Health Professional. Mental Health First Aid is a skills-based training course that teaches participants about mental health and substance-use issues. More importantly, however, it’s a tool that public health leaders across the United States have begun to employ to engage in early detection and intervention around the signs and symptoms of specific illnesses. The primer provides concrete tools and engagement with local mental health resources, national organizations, support groups, and online tools for mental health and addiction treatment and support.
