Maternal and Child Health

ASTHO’s Maternal and Child Health program addresses issues affecting families, women of reproductive age, infants, children, and adolescents, including those with special healthcare needs. It works to increase state capacity to develop and implement policies and programs in support of maternal and child health. It builds opportunities for state health agencies and others to work together to improve maternal and child health across the nation.

Breastfeeding Promotion and Support

Through a learning community model, ASTHO works with states to increase access to breastfeeding promotion and support. The learning community brings together health agencies and partners to highlight best practices and current efforts at the state and federal levels. Read more »

ASTHO, HRSA Host Maternal and Child Health COVID-19 National Partners Convening

On April 26, 2021, ASTHO, in partnership with HRSA’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), hosted the Maternal and Child Health COVID-19 National Partners Convening. 65 representatives from states, national organizations, and federal agencies convened to share current activities, anticipated challenges, and opportunities for collaborative problem solving related to the COVID-19 vaccine rollout and uptake in maternal and child health populations. ASTHO and APHSA’s Transformative Leaders for Thriving Families Project

ASTHO and the American Public Human Services Association (APHSA), with support from Casey Family Programs, are partnering together on Transformative Leaders for Thriving Families: Building a Public Health Approach to Child and Family Well-Being. This new learning community will bring together leaders from public health and the child welfare sectors to jointly create new approaches to drive progress, help families thrive, and use prevention-focused public health approaches to reduce the number of adverse childhood experiences families experience. Early Brain Development

In early childhood, the human brain undergoes its most rapid period of growth, and experiences during this time can set up a child for future health and success, or cause later challenges. Public health officials and others can use proven science to intervene early and make a difference in the lives of young children and families. Read more »

Through a multi-state learning community, ASTHO is working to improve the capacity of states to successfully increase access to contraception. These resources highlight current efforts at the national, federal, and state levels.

In-utero opioid exposure and neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) are public health issues that the majority of states are facing today. A statewide approach to NAS can address several levels of intervention. Read more »
