Public Health Road Map for State and National Partnerships

The long-term goal of CDC’s Healthy Brain Initiative is to maintain or improve the cognitive performance of all adults. This goal can be achieved through collaborative and effective partnerships at national, state, and local levels. ASTHO supports opportunities to promote cognitive functioning and address the needs of care partners.

Healthy Brain InitiativeOn July 15, 2013, the Alzheimer’s Association and CDC’s Healthy Aging Program released the second in a series of road maps to advance cognitive health as an integral component of public health. The Healthy Brain Initiative: The Public Health Road Map for State and National Partnerships, 2013–2018, outlines how state and local public health agencies and their partners can promote cognitive functioning, address cognitive impairment for individuals living in the community, and help meet the needs of care partners.

State Legislation

There are 28 states that have state government plans focusing on Alzheimer's disease and/or dementia, and 14 other states are in the process of developing plans.

ASTHO Healthy Aging and Public Health Learning Community

With support from the CDC, ASTHO has convened a healthy aging and public health learning community. This learning community has brought together five demonstration states to serve as the model in expanding work around state public health/healthy aging network collaborations and policy/system-level interventions to promote healthy aging. States have discussed the issues influencing the health of older adults and have implemented strategies to promote older adult health, with a particular focus on Alzheimer's disease and other dementia.
