Mitigating Influenza in Vulnerable Populations

This project aims to improve influenza outcomes among vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and racial-ethnic minorities, including tribes. ASTHO partners with relevant medical and professional organizations to develop resources, conduct outreach and build partnerships to improve influenza immunization rates in these vulnerable communities.

The Maternal Influenza Review Program (MIRP) aimed to reveal preventable issues that contribute to increased morbidity and mortality from seasonal flu in pregnant women.

Resources from the Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP):

Community Action Team 

ASTHO partnered with AAIP and the Arizona Department of Health Services to form a Community Action Team (CAT) to improve influenza immunization uptake among American Indian communities in Arizona. During the 2016-2017 flu season, CAT members disseminated new and existing flu-related materials and resources to healthcare providers in an effort to strengthen healthcare provider recommendations for influenza immunizations, as well as disseminated flu-related resources and prevention materials to the general public. Resources promoted as part of this effort are below.

Leveraging Partnerships to Improve Influenza Immunization Uptake in American Indian Communities - Webinar
ASTHO and AAIP hosted a webinar for healthcare providers and others who currently serve American Indian populations in Arizona. The webinar raises awareness on flu trends and coverage rates, discusses promising practices, initiatives, and efforts regarding influenza immunizations, as well as provides useful resources and materials for healthcare providers to use to help improve influenza immunization uptake among patients.

TAPI Influenza Resource Page for Providers

The Arizona Partnership for Immunization (TAPI) developed a resource webpage that includes information on influenza surveillance data, current recommendations from ACIP, as well as bilingual flyers and posters for healthcare providers.

ADHS Influenza in Arizona

The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) conducts influenza surveillance in collaboration with local health departments and participating health care providers and laboratories, and produces reports on influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) activity in Arizona.

IHS Influenza Surveillance Reports

Indian Health Service (IHS) completes influenza surveillance reports utilizing data from the IHS Influenza Awareness System (IIAS).

Combating Influenza Myths and Misconceptions to Improve Influenza Immunization Uptake In Hispanic Communities in New York State - Webinar
ASTHO, NHMA, the New York State Department of Health, and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene hosted a webinar for healthcare providers who currently serve Hispanic populations in New York. The webinar highlights strategies to incorporate cultural competency into influenza immunization recommendations, as well as provides key recommendations for providers on addressing influenza misconceptions and misinformation among patients.

NHMA Adult Vaccination Toolkit
This toolkit was developed as a resource for healthcare providers to improve vaccination rates in Hispanic communities. The toolkit identifies knowledge, attitudes and behaviors among healthcare providers, as well as highlights barriers and recommendations to improve vaccination uptake.

This clinical bulletin provides healthcare providers with timely and practical guidance on influenza including vaccine safety information, information on influenza reporting, as well as resources for both providers and patients.

This bulletin, geared toward the general public, provides simplified information on flu, as well as resources on where to get flu vaccines.
